Wolfgang Rabenstein was born in 1985 in Bruck an der Mur. He began taking pictures and writing short stories in 1992, at the age of seven. After graduating from a school with an emphasis on media design, he focused his attention on various areas alongside photography and writing, producing several websites, animations, and commissioned photography in the following years.
In 2013, after receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Software Design from the FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences in Austria, he began to concentrate on creative photography. Two years later, he reached the finals in his very first participation in a nationwide photography competition.
From 2017 to 2018, he attended the Academy of Applied Photography in Graz. During his studies, he was not only able to develop his photographic style, but also realised his first group exhibition alongside four other artists. In March 2018, Beyond The Sky went online, followed by several exhibitions and film screenings in Graz and Salzburg, where he was represented for the first time across the disciplines of photography, film, and literature.
The following years were largely characterised by online exhibitions and intensive work on his book Shades – A Photopoem. In this work, his photographs are woven into a coherent whole and linked together by a continuous narrative; the illustrated book was finally published in February 2026.
To further develop his creative practice, he has been studying for a Master’s degree in Digital Design at USTP St. Pölten since autumn 2025 as part of the Experimental Media Masterclass. Combining his technical and artistic expertise opens up new opportunities in media art, AI research, and his current media-archaeological investigation into digital transience.
Wolfgang Rabenstein’s works address both socio-political and philosophical themes, but also require a very intense dialogue between the artist and himself. His work is underpinned in equal measure by text and sound, both of which can be found in one form or another within his pieces. His images are characterised by a particular visual and emotional complexity, whilst his texts and film works captivate through their deeply moving directness. This poetry, born of sensitivity, interpretation, and concretisation, invites the viewer to immerse themselves in his work and find themselves transported to another world.
